Using Claude Code to document legacy Power Apps

AI-assisted analysis can help turn an unfamiliar Power Apps system into documentation a team can review. The useful result is an accurate explanation of the app and its dependencies.

Start with the business workflow

Describe what the application does and who uses it. Walk through the main user journeys with staff, including approvals and exceptions that may not be obvious from the interface.

This gives the documentation a purpose and provides context for interpreting formulas, screens and automations.

Map the app and its dependencies

An agent can inspect exported assets and related configuration to help explain screens, important formulas and connectors. Include Power Automate flows and the data sources behind the app, such as Dataverse, SharePoint, SQL Server or APIs.

The draft should show where rules live, how information moves and which dependencies need further investigation. Missing exports or inaccessible configuration should be recorded as gaps.

Review the findings against the running system

A readable explanation still needs verification. Check important business rules with staff and compare the documentation with the app behaviour and relevant configuration.

Correct uncertain interpretations before using the document to guide a feature or migration. Keep enough references for another developer to find the formula, flow or data source being described.

Use the documentation for the next change

The reviewed document can support handover, bug fixing and a staged improvement plan. It should explain the areas affected by a proposed change and the behaviour that must be preserved.

We provide Power Apps development and support and existing-system takeover. Reviewing development history can add context where related code changes are available.
