How to make an inherited software system safer to change

A system can remain useful while its maintenance becomes difficult. Clear ownership, targeted checks and a repeatable release process help you keep making improvements.

Remove uncertainty around ownership

Document the code location, hosting, database, backups and release process. Identify who is responsible for support and which external services the application depends on.

This information should be available to the business and the people maintaining the system. Recovering access after a developer leaves is often the first practical step.

Put checks around the important behaviour

Start with the workflows where failure would have a significant effect: a calculation, data import, payment step or report. Use representative examples to establish what correct behaviour looks like.

Some checks can be automated; others may need a documented verification process. Their value is in identifying a meaningful failure before the change reaches users.

Make deployment repeatable

A release should have clear steps and a known recovery path. Record required configuration, database changes and the order of any dependent updates.

A test environment and continuous integration checks can help where they address a real risk. Introduce them around the changes being made and expand as the application needs.

Improve one component at a time

Fixing a fragile import or separating a difficult integration can make later feature work easier. Choose improvements based on the maintenance problems and business requirements you have observed.

AI agents can assist with analysis, code changes and documentation. An experienced developer still needs to review the implementation and verify the behaviour.

Use the improvements to guide the roadmap

The result of each change helps show which parts of the system remain useful and which need further work. Modernisation planning should use that evidence.

We can help with existing-system support and features and bug fixes alongside these improvements.
